Orlando area congressional hopeful Val Demmings rakes in $160,000

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Democrat Val Demings posted an impressive $160,000 in fundraising during the third quarter of her bid for Congress. Demings has only been in the race for Florida’s 10th Congressional district for 45 days.

“My campaign for Congress is about economic equality and standing up for working families in Central Florida by investing in public education, improving our criminal justice system, and ensuring we have strong national security,” Demings said. “I am very proud of the broad, grassroots support my campaign has received in the weeks following my announcement.”

Of the total funds raised to date, which is the entire $160,000 this report, 77 percent of the contributions were less than $300 and most came from local donors.

Demmings, a former Orlando police chief, is running to replace Republican Dan Webster for the redrawn District 10 House seat. The district Webster defeated Demmings to represent used to favor conservative voters. With redrawn lines, it’s now a Democratic-leaning district.

Another Democrat, state Sen. Geraldine Thompson, is also running for the seat. Thompson just announced her bid this week.
