Callers in the Florida Keys can expect more SUN – or “786” on a telephone keypad – as a new area code is set up for the southern tip of the state.
Existing numbers in the Keys will continue to use the current code of 305, but as of June 1, 2015, new numbers issued will have a 786 prefix.
In addition, as of April 18, 2015, all callers from the Keys will need to dial the area code and seven-digit number, even for local calls.
The need for extra numbers is to blame.
“Additional area code is needed because of the Keys’ growing population and the increased use of multiple phones, especially wireless,” says Art Graham, chair of the Public Service Commission, in a statement issued Thursday. “Residents will keep their existing number, especially important to businesses and their customers.”
