Purchase of Bayfront Hospital owner HMA nears completion

St. Petersburg’s Bayfront Hospital could be under new ownership by the end of the month as a Tennessee-based company is poised to buy one of Florida’s largest hospital chains.

Community Health Systems announced last year that it would acquire the Naples-based Health Management Associates in a $7.6 billion deal that will affect about 25 Florida hospitals, including Bayfront Health on Sixth Street South in St. Petersburg.

In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing Wednesday, the Federal Trade Commission is allowing the completion of the deal after the two companies said they reached an agreement.

As part of the deal, Community Health Systems say they will divest two HMA-owned subsidiaries hospitals in Gadsden, Ala., and Hartsville, S.C.
