Here’s another way of looking at the comparison between the 1930s and today. A chart (via Yglesias) that shows the path of real GDP indexed to the pre-crash peak:

What we have right now is the worst recession since the Great Depression. And it’s the worst by a large margin. It’s a very bad situation. But this is genuinely a walk in the park compared to that situation.
