Martin County School Board member Rebecca Negron has announced a run for the congressional seat vacated by Patrick Murphy, who is running for U.S. Senate.
“I believe we live in a nation that, as our founding fathers intended, has given its citizens the greatest opportunities for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” said Negron, wife of state Sen. Joe Negron, in a statement.
“However, I am concerned that if we continue on our current path, those opportunities will be threatened. We are straying from the principles that have made our country great and on which our country was founded, which is fracturing our nation and stifling meaningful policy changes.”
Negron has already assembled a formidable political team. Consultant Rich Johnston of Public Concepts and Pat Bainter of Data Targeting are on board. Sarah Bascom and the comms team that piloted David Jolly to a win in Congressional District 13 is also part of Negron’s team.
Negron is already downplaying the partisan nature of her run, though, emphasizing a practical approach necessary in such a divided district.
“Partisan politics will always exist, but we must find a way to avoid partisan policies that do not move our communities and our nation forward,” continued Negron. “We can still retain our individualistic spirit and celebrate our differences and unique perspectives, but we must work to find common ground that will result in real change.”
