State Rep. Jimmie T. Smith will run in the 2016 election for state Senate District 5. He made the announcement on his Facebook page Friday.
“Today I officially filed for State Senator,” wrote Smith. “The race is for 2016 but the groundwork starts today.”
Senate District 5, now held by term-limited state Sen. Charlie Dean covers most or all of 10 counties in northern Florida between Baker and Citrus County.
The Inverness Republican was automatically re-elected to a third term without opposition during the qualifying period last week.
