Rep. Jimmie Smith files to run for State Senate in 2016

State Rep. Jimmie T. Smith will run in the 2016 election for state Senate District 5. He made the announcement on his Facebook page Friday.

Today I officially filed for State Senator,” wrote Smith. “The race is for 2016 but the groundwork starts today.”

Senate District 5, now held by term-limited state Sen. Charlie Dean covers most or all of 10 counties in northern Florida between Baker and Citrus County.

The Inverness Republican was automatically re-elected to a third term without opposition during the qualifying period last week.
