Rep. Joe Garcia invites DREAM Act student to attend SOTU

U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia invited an undocumented student from Homestead as his guest for tonight’s State of the Union address.

Mayra Rubio Limon, a college freshman at Miami-Dade College, will join the representative from Florida’s 26th Congressional District in Washington D.C. to hear President Barack Obama’s annual constitutionally mandated address to Congress.

The Miami-Dade Democrat was one of the original sponsors of HR 15, the House’s comprehensive immigration reform bill. The measure would address border security, legalize undocumented residents and fix some legal immigration programs. Garcia spent the last several months pushing for change for people like Limon.

“The opportunity to live in the U.S., to work hard, get a good education and provide a decent life for myself and my family, is all I’ve ever dreamed of” Limon said. “I am honored to be able to attend this special event and hope President Obama and Congress will make it a priority to reform the laws that will allow people, like myself, a chance to share in the American dream.”

Limon is covered under the 2011 DREAM Act, which permits certain immigrant students who grew up in the U.S. to apply for temporary legal status. Undocumented children who go to college or serve in the military would ultimately obtain permanent legal status and eligibility for citizenship .

“Mayra embodies the spirit of all those who come to this country seeking a better life for themselves and their families, yet are denied these opportunities because of their statuses as undocumented immigrants” Garcia said. “Comprehensive immigration reform is a top priority for Mayra, for the 11 million families in search of the American Dream.

“As the President addresses our nation tomorrow,” he added, “it is my hope it will be his priority, as well. It is not only the right thing to do for our communities, but also for our economy – one largely supported by the work of these immigrants”

The President will address the nation tonight at 9 p.m.
