House Democratic Leader Ron Saunders of Key West filed paperwork Monday to run for the state Senate in District 39, which includes parts of Miami, and the Keys, reports the News Service of Florida. There’s no incumbent in the district – Democratic Sen.Larcenia Bullard of Miami is retiring. But Bullard’s son, Rep. Dwight Bullard is running for the seat, as is former Rep. James Bush.

The district includes Little Haiti in the north end of Miami and then stretches along a narrow isthmus west, picking up the Miami airport, then wraps around the west side of Miami, before jutting back up again into the area along US 1 in southern Miami Dade, including Goulds and West Perrine. In the south, the district includes Homestead and all of the Keys.
