After narrowly winning his seat in 2012, Republican Ross Spano has already attracted a Democratic contender for 2014, according to Sunshine State News.
Attorney Ty Hinnant filed to run against Spano as a Democrat for his District 59 seat. The Republican incumbent tells Sunshine State News that he is “excited” to have an opponent in the race.
On paper, District 59 is a true swing district, which leans slightly Democrat with 38 to 37 percent. Spano’s victory proves that a Republican can succeed in the area that encompasses much of eastern Hillsborough County, including parts of Valrico, Riverview and Brandon.
Spano’s opposition to the Medicaid expansion is the main reason for Hinnant’s run for the seat.
“Ross Spano’s vote against Medicaid expansion is simply unacceptable,” Hinnant said in a statement announcing his candidacy. “Rejecting the $51 billion over the next 10 years will leave millions of Floridians without access to health care. In addition, Medicaid expansion would provide a substantial amount of jobs for Floridians.”
