From Wayne Garcia: Maybe it is a sign of the tolerant times that a high-profile campaign volunteer for a St. Petersburg mayoral candidate can get away with calling the hometown daily “a cunt of a newspaper,” or maybe it is a comment on the state of the news media.

Either way, consultant Peter Schorsch appears to have gotten away with it, while at the same time declaring that he will no longer post comments on the St. Petersburg Times Bay Buzz blog and won’t be contributing to our own Political Whore either.

Before disappearing from the local scene foa few years after getting into legal troubles, Schorsch was very active in the blogosphere and a favorite target for critics, whom he regularly engaged in comment wars on various blogs. Schorsch, who is helping manage St. Petersburg City Councilman Jamie Bennett’s campaign for mayor, wrote on his own blog:

“I don’t want to be associated with anonymous dorks and that is why I will no longer post on the Bay Buzz blog. Here is this great institution, the St. Petersburg Times. A newspaper I grew up admiring. There were moments in my youth when my proudest achievement was seeing one of my letters-to-the-editor in print. But it is becoming a disgrace.

“It is a cunt of a newspaper. An old lady drunk on its own influence, leaning on the memories of better days.”

Unconnected to his disagreement with Bay Buzz’s comments policy and general tone, Schorsch is also no longer a contributor to CL blogs. His increasingly high profile in the Bennett campaign made me reconsider his writing for PoHo blog, since I am deeply involved in covering the race. Schorsch chose to quit contributing rather than sit it out until after the election.

Peter Schorsch is the President of Extensive Enterprises and is the publisher of some of Florida’s most influential new media websites, including SaintPetersBlog.com, FloridaPolitics.com, ContextFlorida.com, and Sunburn, the morning read of what’s hot in Florida politics. SaintPetersBlog has for three years running been ranked by the Washington Post as the best state-based blog in Florida. In addition to his publishing efforts, Peter is a political consultant to several of the state’s largest governmental affairs and public relations firms. Peter lives in St. Petersburg with his wife, Michelle, and their daughter, Ella.
