Sen. Anitere Flores, R-Miami, was chosen to head up the new Doral College, a new university affiliated with charter school Doral Academy, reports the Miami Herald via the News Service of Florida. The university has yet to be formally approved by the state Commission for Independent Education, the newspaper notes, but Flores has already quit her post at Florida International University in anticipation of the new job. Flores sits on the Senate K-12 education budget subcommittee, and told the Herald it was not a conflict of interest. It’s unusual to have a charter opening a university. More typically, it is the other way around, with a university wanting to start a charter school. “It’s a brand-new concept,” Flores told the Herald.
