State Senator Lizbeth Benacquisto will receive special thanks Thursday for her legislative work to help feed the hungry in Florida. In a special ceremony, she will be presented the 2013 Feeding Hope Award for outstanding leadership.

Giving the award to the Ft. Meyers Republican will be the last year’s inaugural recipient, Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Adam Putnam, along with the Executive Director of the Florida Association of Food Banks (FAFB) Rebecca Brislain.

The Hope Award is an annual recognition of individuals or organizations that have made sustained commitment to solving hunger in the state. According to the FAFB, more than 3 million Floridians regularly experience hunger.

In a statement announcing the award, the group chose Benacquisto due to her strong leadership in raising awareness of the state’s hunger problem and legislative support for local food banks.

Representatives from both the FAFB and the Harry Chapin Food Bank will also attend the luncheon event, which begins at noon on Thursday at Suncoast Beverage, 2996 Hanson Street, Fort Myers.
