Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says he has talked with Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, but not about the touchy issue of whether the governor might vote with Democrats if he’s elected to the Senate.
Crist is running as an independent for Florida’s open Senate seat. Rep. Kendrick Meek is the leading Democratic contender, but some party activists fear his prospects are poor. If Crist defeats likely GOP nominee Marco Rubio and caucuses with Senate Democrats, it could help them keep their majority status.
But any hints that Democratic leaders are quietly supporting Crist would anger Meek supporters.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Crist and Reid have spoken.
Reid told reporters Tuesday he fully supports Meek. He said his one phone conversation with Crist several months ago did not touch on Crist’s possible caucus plans.
Reid said it’s proper for a Senate majority leader to talk with a large state’s governor at times.
