Senate panel takes last look at Florida redistricting

The Senate Reapportionment Committee is taking a final look at proposed redistricting maps before they go to a floor vote in the Republican-controlled chamber, reports the Associated Press.

The panel is set to vote Wednesday on redistricting plans for the Senate and Florida’s congressional seats.

It will consider changes that Senate Democratic Leader Nan Rich has proposed for both plans. No other senators have offered amendments.

Rich contends the committee-sponsored plans would violate a pair of new state constitutional amendments that prohibit gerrymandering intended to benefit incumbents or political parties.

The House is moving at a slightly slower pace with final committee action expected late next week.
