Newly-elected Senate President Don Gaetz said Tuesday that he wants the Senate to undertake an extensive review of state contracts as part of its budget process this year, reports the News Service of Florida.
“I want a separate schedule of every contract that is over a set amount,” Gaetz told reporters after the conclusions of Tuesday’s organization session. ” … Every contract needs to be evaluated in the context of the individual appropriations line items.” Gaetz conceded that he doesn’t know right now what the level would be that would trigger the review. He said contracts take up 56 percent of the state’s operating budget. “Let’s make sure we’re getting value received and the best price,” Gaetz said.
He proposed a similar review for programs throughout the budget, saying some might no longer be necessary.
