A special referendum election is held today in Hamilton County asking voters to approve or reject a slot machine license, via The News Service of Florida. Slots gaming is being sought in the tiny northeast Florida county by Hamilton Jai Alai & Poker and Hamilton Downs Race Track in Jasper. But there’s a question as to whether the license would even be granted, even if the measure passes. A legal opinion from Attorney General Pam Bondi said local referenda allowing slots don’t apply if the Legislature hasn’t specifically authorized the gaming. Also, backers say they want to get a permit for barrel racing, like one currently being fought over in Gadsden County, but right now there’s no horse track at the facility.
