Signatures for a proposed solar amendment to the state constitution have been verified and the measure has been submitted by state elections officials to Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Floridians for Solar Choice says it wants to encourage solar energy production with a constitutional amendment that would prohibit governments or utilities from placing barriers on the sale or distribution of the power.
The political committee needs more than 683,000 signatures to put the measure on the ballot by Feb. 1, 2016. On Tuesday, the political committee announced it had collected the 72,000 signatures required for Florida Supreme Court review of the measure.
On Wednesday, Secretary of State Ken Detzner informed Bondi in a letter that the signatures had been collected. Bondi will forward the petition to the Supreme Court for review within 30 days, according to the Division of Elections.
Tory Perfetti, chairman of Floridians for Solar Choice, said this week that the collection of signatures showed “broad support among Florida’ families and businesses for removing barriers to commerce in solar power.”
