Sports columnist John Romano named heir to Howard Troxler

I can’t say I saw this coming, although I had predicted the Times would replace Howard Troxler by promoting from within and would replace him with an out-of-left field choice (I had heard the paper was looking at music critic Sean Daly as a possible candidate).

Here’s the internal memo from the Times:

On January 1, Florida’s Best Newspaper will debut not only a new name, but also a new metro columnist: John Romano.

John’s hometown-kid credentials make him a great choice to be a leading Times personality around Tampa Bay.

Peter Schorsch is the President of Extensive Enterprises and is the publisher of some of Florida’s most influential new media websites, including SaintPetersBlog.com, FloridaPolitics.com, ContextFlorida.com, and Sunburn, the morning read of what’s hot in Florida politics. SaintPetersBlog has for three years running been ranked by the Washington Post as the best state-based blog in Florida. In addition to his publishing efforts, Peter is a political consultant to several of the state’s largest governmental affairs and public relations firms. Peter lives in St. Petersburg with his wife, Michelle, and their daughter, Ella.
