Spurs trounce Heat … in campaign donations

The Miami Heat may have made an amazing comeback in Tuesday night’s NBA playoff game against San Antonio, but they have nothing on the political might of the Spurs, at least according to the Center for Public Integrity.

For the 2012 elections, Spurs owner Peter Holt and his wife, Julianna, gave four times as much to political groups and politicians as the Heat owner Micky Arison and his wife, Madeleine.

The Holts donated more than $500,000 in 2012, with $250,000 to the GOP super PAC Restore Our Future supporting Mitt Romney, and $100,000 to the Texas Conservatives Fund, who backed Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in his failed run for U.S. Senate.

In contrast, the Arisons donated only about $125,000 combined.

Recipients of Arison support included the National Republican Congressional Committee with $15,000; Florida Republican Rep. John Mica, with $10,000; the PAC of Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor received $7,000; and $5,800 went to the PAC of Florida Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson.

The numbers come from a Center for Public Integrity review of information provided by the Center for Responsive Politics.

The total amounts donated by both NBA team owners can be found here.
