The St. Petersburg Association of Firefighters Local 747 has endorsed Joanne Lentino for the Pinellas County School Board.

“We commend you on your willingness to run for the position of School Board Member, District 1,” Richard Pauley, Jr, union president wrote.

“The St. Petersburg Association of Firefighters Local 747 would like to support and endorse your campaign. We believe you will honorably serve the citizens of School Board, District 1 and the interests of the men and women in Fire and Emergency Medical Services, who have made the protection of life and property their life’s work.”

Lentino said she was honored to have the firefighters’ support.

“Every day, our firefighters and emergency medical service personnel and their families make sacrifices to protect and care for our citizens,” Lentino said. “These brave men and women have my support and appreciation for their service and dedication to our community.”

Lentino, a recently retired teacher who taught in Pinellas County schools for 10 years, is running for the District 1 at-large seat against Matt Stewart, a deputy director for the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections. Both are first-time candidates.

Lentino made Pinellas her permanent home in 2003 after working for the city of Las Vegas Cultural Affairs Division where she managed the center budget, grant proposals, full-time staff, and day-to-day operations.

Lentino said she continues to stay involved in the schools by mentoring students. She also volunteers for the Tampa Bay Estuary community advisory committee, the Sierra Club, and Tampa Bay Watch. She has a bachelor’s degree in the arts from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

The District 1 School Board race is a countywide, nonpartisan vote.
