When it comes to meeting constituents face-to-face, it is like father, like son.
State Rep. Matt Gaetz will hold public hearings next month on the “Stand Your Ground” self-defense laws in the Criminal Justice Committee he chairs in the Florida House.
At the same time, Gaetz’s father, Senate President Don Gaetz is keeping up with his regular neighborhood day events. The most recent was a Freeport meeting on Wednesday.
The senior Gaetz met with residents at the Freeport Community Center to discuss issues like jobs and Medicare. In the next year, his focus will be economic recovery.
However, it was Stand Your Ground that kept most of his audience talking, the same issue the younger Gaetz is addressing in the House.
“People in north Florida are strong second amendment supporters, and they believe in self-defense, they believe if their lives or their loved ones are threatened they want to be able to defend themselves,” Gaetz told WJHG.com. “So I think that’s the message that I’m hearing from people in this area, and that’s certainly my own feeling as well.”
