According to, a real race will determine the leadership of the Florida Federation of Young Republicans this year. For the past two years, Jacksonville resident Peret Pass, 24, ran unopposed to fill one-year terms as president.

This time, Pass faces an opponent — Tampa resident Jonny Torres. The 33-year-old head of the Tampa Bay Republicans announced he would be running.

Torres says the FFYR “has no representation” from the I-4 corridor.  He has support from State Rep. James Grant of Tampa.

Among those advocating Pass are state GOP Chairman Lenny Curry, CFO Jeff Atwater, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam and State Sen. John Thrasher. Pass once worked for Thrasher.

The vote for the new FFYR president will be at the annual convention in Orlando Aug. 16-18.
