Statewide permitting bill filed

Plans to launch a statewide environmental permitting bill were made more concrete on Thursday as Sen. Nancy Detert, R-Venice, filed a measure, SB 1354, that requires the Department of Environmental Protection by Oct. 1 to begin the process of setting up a statewide set of rules for construction, alternations, repairs and removal of dams, reservoirs and other storm water management structures. The bill mirrors a house proposal (HB 7003) sponsored by Rep. Steve Crisafulli, R-Merritt Island filed earlier this month. Both bills aim at standardizing permitting rules, a move that would reduce the influence of water management districts.
