Steve Cona suspends campaign for Hillsborough County Commission

Republican Steve Cona has dropped out of the race for Hillsborough County Commission District 6, a seat held by Democrat Kevin Beckner.

“I would like to announce that, effective immediately, I am suspending my campaign for Hillsborough County Commission, District 6.  Since filing to run in July 2011, I have been a tireless campaigner.  After much consideration over the last few weeks, I feel my heart is more into being a father and husband than a candidate.  I have a fantastic wife and two great children that I wish to spend more time with.

Throughout the campaign, I have heard the pleas of concerned citizens.  I share their concerns that our county government is broken.  There is a fundamental lack of conviction on our County Commission and a political atmosphere that makes it almost impossible for a true citizen servant to rise and serve.  Our Commissioners listen intently to the political parties, special interests and blind ambition that guide their decisions, not to the citizens that pay the tax dollars that fund their wasteful programs and purchases.  For this, they are rewarded by local lobbyists, unions, political parties and special interest groups with large campaign donations to ensure their political survival.

For now, I will continue my role as an advocate for small businesses and Hillsborough County taxpayers as a private citizen.  I feel that, from the private sector, I can play a much more prominent role in holding local officials accountable and guiding them to create policy that will serve as an engine for job growth and help make Hillsborough County the best place in Florida to live and work.

I would like to thank, from the bottom of my heart, everyone who has invested their time, energy and hard-earned dollars in my campaign.

I could not have made it this far without your continued support.  I will be forever grateful for your confidence and trust.“
