State Sen. Steve Oelrich told the Ocala Star Banner that he’ll run for Congress if preliminary changes to congressional districts remain in place. The former Alachua County sheriff who has served in the Senate since 2006 doesn’t yet face term limits and could try to remain in the Senate. But Oelrich told the Star Banner he has his eye on the proposed new sixth congressional district, currently held by Rep. Cliff Stearns, a Republican from Ocala who may run for a new Congressional District 26. “My intention is not to really run against an incumbent such as Rep. Stearns,” Oelrich told the Star Banner. ‘I think he does a good job for North Central Florida and he is a conservative guy.” Two candidates have filed to run against Stearns, Democrat Steve Schonberg and Republican Ted Yoho.
