Another day, another position on guns for Darren Soto

in Peter by

At first blush, Sen. Darren Soto joining other Orlando-area lawmakers in calling for a Special Session to implement new restrictions on firearms purchases make perfect sense. After all, he’s a young Democrat from an urban Central Florida district who occasionally makes liberal noises when it comes to LGBT rights, women’s access to heath care, and other relatively safe social issues. So it stands to reason that in the wake of the Pulse nightclub massacre that has left Orlando traumatized and angry, Soto…

Gwen Graham co-sponsoring Bill Nelson’s gun purchase oversight bill

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham may straddle the fence on some issues dear to progressives, but she came out on Thursday with a full-throated endorsement of Senate Democrats’ plan to notify the FBI when a suspected terrorist buys a firearm. The bill’s main Senate sponsor is Florida’s senior senator, Sen. Bill Nelson, who introduced the bill on Wednesday in response to renewed political will to rein in guns following Sunday’s lethal mass shooting at a gay night club in Orlando. “In the wake of the…

Donald Trump says Orlando attack a reason to close borders, tighten intelligence

in 2017 by

After briefly expressing sympathy for and solidarity with the people of Orlando, Donald Trump used Sunday’s Pulse nightclub massacre as reason to double-down Monday on his desires to ban Muslim immigrants and broaden domestic intelligence gathering. In a speech at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire that was billed as an attack on presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, presumptive Republican nominee Trump led with Orlando, focused on radical Islam as the cause of the Orlando and San Bernardino massacres, then turned to…

Broward Democrat files gun safety bill

Pompano Beach Democratic Rep. Gwyndolen Clarke Reed filed a bill Friday that would change some of the rules on concealed weapons permits in Florida. Current law doesn’t require permit holders to tell police they are carrying a weapon. The bill would also increase the fine for not carrying the license from $25 to $1,000. “This bill would provide a safety measure…

Maria Sachs files amendment to campus carry bill

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

State Sen. Maria Sachs has filed an amendment to this year’s “campus carry” legislation that would allow each public college and university to decide whether to allow concealed weapons on campuses. Sachs, a Delray Beach Democrat, submitted the change Monday to the bill (SB 68). The legislation as currently written would delete the current blanket prohibition on concealed weapons being carried into “any college or university facility.” Gun-rights advocates, such as the National Rifle Association, have joined with legislative Republicans to…

Greg Steube files bill to allow guns into legislative meetings

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

State Rep. Greg Steube called a columnist’s bluff on Tuesday, filing a bill to allow guns into public hearings at the Florida Capitol. Scott Maxwell of the Orlando Sentinel wrote last week that Florida lawmakers were “gun-shy cowards” for proposing to allow guns on college campuses, but not inside the Legislature. “Republican House members have advanced two gun bills: one allowing Floridians to openly carry weapons and one allowing guns on college campuses. They have done so in the name of gun freedom,” wrote Maxwell.…

Matt Gaetz files ‘open carry’ gun bill

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

State Rep. Matt Gaetz is leading the latest attempt to pass an “open carry” gun law in Florida. The Shalimar Republican filed HB 163 on Monday; in part, the bill would allow a person licensed to carry a concealed firearm or weapon to “also openly carry such firearm or weapon.” In a Facebook post in July, Gaetz – who is seeking the Senate seat held by his father, former Senate President Don Gaetz – called Florida “an outlier” in prohibiting…
