5 things I think about today’s St. Petersburg Times

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

As I have said many times before, it is not always what’s reported that’s important, it’s also what’s not reported that really matters. Case in point is Jeff Greene.  He should be topic number one for the political reporters at the Times.  In fact, Adam Smith and Co. should be writing this extended profile about Greene, not the Washington Post. But it’s almost as if Greene is getting, if not a pass, a chance to truly compete against Kendrick Meek.…

5 things I think about today’s St. Petersburg Times: The new food critic pussies out

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Well, that didn’t take long. In his first major decision as the new Times food critic, Jim Webster pussies out of making a major change to the newspaper’s grading system, which is currently based on an anachronistic four-star system. Pretty much in response to my unending criticism of the Times‘ grading system, specifically my criticism of Laura Reiley’s seemingly unending awarding of 2.5 stars to almost every restaurant she reviewed, Webster posted on the Times‘ must-be-redesigned blog about dining out…

5 things I think about this weekend’s St. Petersburg Times: A banner week for the newspaper

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

What a roller-coaster week it’s been for the folks at First Avenue South. After word spread — on this blog first — that the Times was dropping its lawsuit against the City of St. Petersburg, thereby ceding the fight over the city’s solicitation ban, many, including me, were ready to write that the axiom ‘You never pick a fight with those who buy ink by the barrel’ no longer applied to the opponents of the St. Petersburg Times. At least that was…

5 things I think about today’s St. Petersburg Times (6/16)

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Before I write about the issue du jour, let me just tell you how absolutely proud I am to have written a post mentioning the St. Petersburg Times that ended up in Urban Dictionary.  Yes, the post involved the word “taint” and it’s moments like this that make life worth living. Also, stop the presses, outgoing Times food critic Laura Reiley actually wrote a review that does not end with the awarding of 2.5 stars. In this case, she awarded…
