State won’t have to pay Planned Parenthood’s legal tab

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

The state won’t end up on the hook for Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida‘s legal fees, according to an appellate court decision released Thursday. The health care organization had sought to punish the Agency for Health Care Administration by making it pay the group’s attorney fees after filing “administrative complaints … alleging violations of (its) license to perform abortions.” The state eventually “voluntarily dismissed the complaints,” according to the opinion. But an administrative law judge still ordered an evidentiary hearing on the…

Today on Context Florida: Abortions, climate change, HIV/AIDS and the next digital threat

Today on Context Florida: Republicans in the Florida Legislature are poised to create more damaging, expensive, unconstitutional laws that could take years to undo in the courts, says Julie Delegal. They’ve done it with the death penalty. They’ve done it with their drug-testing-without-cause laws for poor people. They’ve done it, most profligately, with their gerrymandered maps. More abortion restrictions advancing in Legislature

Anti-abortion forces in the Florida Legislature are advancing a handful of bills they say are aimed at protecting the health of women, but that opponents say aim to deny access to abortions. If the measures pass, legal challenges are likely. A measure passed in Florida and signed by Gov. Earlier in the week, a judge had agreed to put the law on hold pending a lawsuit filed by a Gainesville clinic and other groups.…

A bill that will require a 24-hour waiting period for abortions is now going to Gov. Rick Scott. The Senate voted 26-13 for the measure on Friday after nearly an hour of debate. Republican Sen. Anitere Flores said that if only one woman decides not to get an abortion after a waiting period, she’ll consider the bill a huge success. But Democrats argued that abortion will become the only medical procedure that will have a state-mandated waiting period before it…

New restrictions on abortion could pass in state Legislature

The Florida Legislature is considering several new measures to restrict abortions, including one with a strong chance of passage that calls for a 24-hour waiting period before a woman can undergo the procedure. That measure, House Bill 0633, would require that a woman make one trip to the clinic for legally required counseling before coming back 24 hours later for the procedure. Another measure, House Bill 147, with less chance of passage, would require that abortion clinic doctors have admitting…

Women seeking abortions would have to wait 24 hours under a bill now advancing in the Florida Legislature. A House committee on Thursday approved the bill after hearing passionate testimony. The measure sponsored by Rep. Jennifer Sullivan would require a woman seeking an abortion to talk in person to the physician performing the abortion at least 24 hours ahead of time. Sullivan said she was sponsoring the bill (HB 633) to make sure women were not rushed into seeking an…
