State House candidate fails to qualify because of 1 cent discrepancy on qualifying check

in Statewide by

Adam Smith points out a must-read cautionary tale about how state Rep. Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland, was spared a tough primary, because her rival Neil Combee wrote a check to the state for  $1,781.81 – instead of the requiring filing fee of $1,781.82.  According to the Lakeland Ledger: Stargel had mailed her papers and check to qualify days ago, noting that it was her practice so as to have time to correct any mistakes. Combee mailed his check Wednesday afternoon. “I called during…

In her interview on Bay News 9’s Political Connections, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Alex Sink says she supports a sales tax on Internet purchases.  According to Adam Smith: Sink also said in the interview airing (on Sunday) at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. that she would support a sales tax on Internet purchases, so long as the overall sales tax rate was reduced to make it revenue-neutral.

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

The fallout from St. Petersburg Times reporter Michael Van Sickler’s profile of Jeff Copeland, a prominent political organizer in the African American community, continues even after the article’s first publication. in The Bay and the 'Burg by

***Update – 9:07 a.m. – Just got off the phone with Deneault’s campaign manager, Bob Esposito, who says Deneault and consultants “still working” on language for press release, which should come around “9 or 10.”  But Esposito stated that this straight-shooting Deneault isn’t dropping out for any other reason than health concerns. Spoke with a source affiliated but not directly working for Connie Deneault’s campaign for House District 52.  Source confirms rumor which started after Adam Smith tweeted: “Hearing one…

5 things I think I think about today’s St. Petersburg Times

in Peter/The Bay and the 'Burg by

You don’t realize how lacking for original commentary the St. Petersburg Times is until Howard Troxler goes on vacation.  This is the Achilles Heal of the newspaper — the holes in its lineup of columnists.  Sue Carlton is the Columnist Who Isn’t There and Ernest Hooper is, like the dude in this spoof of the New York Times, just a Cool Black Guy. PolitiFact may wins awards, but columnists sell newspapers and there isn’t a metro columnist writing for the…
