Noting that southern St. Petersburg has suffered long-term poverty and disenfranchisement, Mayor Rick Kriseman earlier this year pledged he would bring full opportunity to the area’s residents. He will take the first step to reach that goal with the Thursday launch of a grassroots campaign to take back neighborhoods against violence. The “Not My Son” campaign is directed at African-American youths and young adults, aged 12 to 24, and their families. The idea is to make both aware of ways…

in Peter/Top Headlines by

Is state Sen. Dwight Bullard the first casualty of the redistricting wars? And is Sen. Oscar Braynon turning his back on him? St. Pete City Council’s invocation highlights commitment to diversity

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete is a city of diversity. At a time when anti-Muslim sentiment is reaching a peak, St. Pete invited a Muslim Imam to deliver it’s invocation and no one seemed to think twice. Meanwhile, people in the Muslim community are subjected daily to hateful rhetoric coming from mostly the Christian Conservative right. They’re compared to terrorists. They’re assumed to be either ISIS or ISIS sympathizers. For years, they’ve felt singled out in airport security lines or had to listen…

As many African-Americans see it, there are 2 Ben Carsons

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Ayauna King-Baker loved Ben Carson‘s “Gifted Hands” memoir so much that she made her daughter Shaliya read it. So when Carson showed up in town to sign copies of his new book, King-Baker dragged the giggly 13-year-old along to the bookstore so they could both meet him. To King-Baker, Carson’s “up-by-your bootstraps” life story makes him a genuine celebrity worth emulating in the African-American community. But she’s also a Pompano Beach Democrat watching Carson rise in the Republican presidential polls.…
