Hillsborough County Commission meeting gets hot talking wage theft

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Although every member of the Hillsborough County Commission weighed in this morning regarding their concern about the issue of wage theft in the county, the Republican members’ prescription of how to alleviate the problem drew the wrath of the measure’s proponent, Democrat Kevin Beckner. Beckner said that his colleagues’ worries about growing the size of government outweighed their professed concern for workers losing wages unfairly in the county, and they rejected his proposal, based on a Miami-Dade County ordinance. The issue isn’t dead…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.7.15 — On economic issues, is Mike Huckabee more in synch with GOP voters?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

As has been mentioned by reporters like myself for months now, Republicans thinking about being president have picked up on the whole income inequality mantle that Democrats like Elizabeth Warren have championed for years now. By that, I mean they use the words “economic inequality.” Beyond that, it’s not exactly clear what they are offering in the way of substantive programs to overcome that. (Marco Rubio has been a bit more specific on that front,) Enter Mike Huckabee. The former Arkansas governor’s…

Joe Keel, owner of Keel and Curley Winery, filed an ethics complaint against Higginbotham last summer, complaining that the county commissioner used the power of his office to shut down the winery’s beer tasting operation. But after the ethics commission…

Brian Willis starts early in his quest for a Hillsborough County Commission seat

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There have been too many election cycles where Hillsborough Democrats appeared to be missing in action, with the party frantic to recruit candidates to at least provide a semblance of a challenge to a Republican. But 2016 doesn’t appear to be one of those years. The fact is that in the Obama-era at least, Democrats come out in big numbers in presidential election years, and with the party base seemingly in love with Hillary Clinton’s chances this early out, Hillsborough…

Tom Scott looking at run for Hillsborough County District 6 seat

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Thomas Scott, a former Tampa city councilman and Hillsborough County commissioner, says he is seriously considering a run for the Hillsborough County Commission District 6 seat next year. “It’s going to be interesting,” Scott told SaintPetersBlog on Wednesday afternoon, when he attended the Fight for 15 rally in Tampa’s Copeland Park that attracted hundreds of people. The seat is being vacated by Democrat Kevin Beckner because of term limits, and a growing number of Democrats are declaring their candidacy for it. In…
