Republican David Wilson considers a run for Hillsborough Commission in 2018

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

After Hillsborough County Commissioner Al Higginbotham announced last week that he won’t run for re-election next year, several names have been floated as potential candidates on both sides of the aisle for the countywide District 7 seat, including Tom Aderhold, Janet Cruz, Tim Schock, and Kevin Beckner.  Along with those likely suspects, there will undoubtedly be some individuals who’ve never ran for office before in the mix, and one of them could be David Wilson. Wilson is a Valrico-based commercial real estate sales associate and a…

Al Higginbotham focuses on his priorities in his last two years in office

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Al Higginbotham says that while he feels he’s still in relatively good health, the time is right to step down next year from public office. The 62-year-old District 7 County Commissioner spoke with FloridaPolitics.com Friday afternoon, a day after announcing that he won’t run for re-election in 2018. Saying that his “body time is on a different time clock,” Higginbotham acknowledges that his decision stems in part because of the attendant health issues related to his 1995 hunting accident that left him partially paralyzed.…

Kevin Beckner is open to running for local (and maybe state) office in 2018

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Kevin Beckner has moved on since a disappointing loss to Pat Frank in the Democratic primary for Hillsborough County Clerk of the Court. Beckner says he is currently studying to get his license to sell real estate in Florida. But he also acknowledges another run for political office isn’t out of the realm of possibility — and could come possibly as early as next year. When asked if he was considering a run against Al Higginbotham in the countywide District 7 race,…

Hillsborough County PTC seeks law firm to investigate former executive director

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Hillsborough County Public Transportation has issued a request for proposal to hire a law firm to conduct an investigation into former executive director Kyle Cockream’s performance as the head of the agency. The board originally voted to do so last October, following a series of media reports that showed he had used off-duty taxicab drivers in PTC ridesharing stings and made unauthorized trips to speak to the Palm Beach County Commission with officials of the cab and limo industry, among other revelations. The move was led by then…

Hillsborough Commissioners reject idea of rotating board chair

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Hillsborough County Commission opted on Wednesday not to support Les Miller’s proposal to make the selection of a Chair rotated between each member. Commissioners selected Stacy White last month to serve as their chairman for the next year, but also agreed to review an alternative way of choosing their leader. Under Miller’s proposal, District 2 Commissioner Victor Crist would automatically become Chairman in late 2017, with District 7 Commissioner Al Higginbotham serving as Vice Chair. Under his scenario, Higginbotham would then move up…

Joe Henderson: Look for Pat Kemp to turn Hillsborough Commission on its ear

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Pat Kemp officially joined the Hillsborough County Commission when she was sworn into office Wednesday. If she stays true to her nature – and there is no to believe she won’t – Kemp might just turn the Commission on its ear. I hope she does. Most politicians like to play it safe and tell voters what they want to hear. Pat Kemp’s style is to tell what she believes they need to hear. Get used to it. Running for a…

Stacy White voted in as Hillsborough County Commission Chairman by his colleagues

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A year ago, the majority Republican led Hillsborough County Commission crossed party lines to vote for Democrat Les Miller as chairman over the GOP incumbent at the time, Sandy Murman, angering some local Republicans. On Tuesday the board made sure not to repeat the same thing. Despite a strong speech supporting Miller’s re-election by Al Higginbotham,  his fellow Republican colleagues opted to go in a different direction, voting 4-3 to elect District 2 Commissioner Stacy White to lead them in 2017. “I…
