Mitch Perry Report for 8.24.16 — Pressure builds for Clinton Foundation to fade away

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Last week it was The Boston Globe. On Tuesday, it was Michael Tomasky at theĀ Daily Beast, and now it’sĀ USA Today.Ā All three media entities say it’s now time for Bill and Hillary Clinton to shut down the Clinton Foundation, as itĀ has become a major liability toĀ the former first ladyĀ as she seeks the presidency. Earlier this week, Bill Clinton (finally) announced details to tighten the ethical safeguards of the foundation, to eliminate ā€œlegitimate concerns about potential conflicts of interest.ā€ But it appears…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Ben DiamondĀ continues to raise cashĀ in the final weeks of his primary race against fellow DemocratĀ Eric LynnĀ in the House District 68 race. The 37-year-old Diamond raised $21,200 from Aug. 6 to Aug. 12, and his political action committee – Protecting Pinellas Families – brought in additional $27,500 in that same period. Among the contributors to his PAC was former Florida CFOĀ Alex Sink, who contributed $5,000. Diamond now has $13,655 cash on hand in his campaign coffers, while his PAC has nearly…

Ben Diamond blasts Eric Lynn for not returning campaign contributions for his previous run for office

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The gloves are starting to come off in the Pinellas County House District 68 race. Ben DiamondĀ is attacking his opponent in the Democratic primary,Ā Eric Lynn, for failing to refund more than $50,000 in contributions he collected for his run for Congress in Florida’s 13th District, which he aborted earlier this year. Lynn left the congressional race when his chances continued to look gloomy against the much-better-knownĀ Charlie Crist.Ā LynnĀ then shifted theĀ more than $700,000 he had raised to run for Congress over to…

Ben Pollara: An insider’s view of Day 3 of the DNC

in 2017/Top Headlines by

The smartest member of Florida’s delegation on Day 3 of #DemsInPhilly was Alex Sink, by a mile. She strolled into the Wells Fargo Center Wednesday wearing an elegant white dress and a pair of blue running sneakers. Well done. Her footwear choice left my leather loafers an even more painful choice than they already were. My former co-finance director for Alex’s gubernatorial campaign, and current executive director of Ruth’s List, Marley Wilkes, could be spotted all over Philly trying to…

House District 68 candidates show little difference on the issues in Tiger Bay forum

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Perhaps the first thing to know about the three candidates who are vying to become the next state Representative of House District 68 in Pinellas County is that none of them awoke on New Years Day this year with the dream of winning this seat. RepublicanĀ JBĀ BensmihenĀ spent most of 2015 preparing to run against DemocratĀ Lois FrankelĀ in Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, and didn’t opt to enter the HD 68 contest until April – actually making him the first candidate to declare his…

Joe Henderson: Tom Lee’s tough, surprising choice

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

I’m a little surprised by Tom Lee’s decision to run for re-election to the state Senate. Along with just about everyone else in the media and Florida politics, I’ve had lengthy chats with Lee about his future since a judge drew new district lines that essentially forced him to make a tough decision. Because his current Brandon home now lies in a different district than the one Lee represents, he had three choices: Challenge Senate Majority Leader Bill Galvano if…

Tom Lee to run for re-election to the Florida Senate

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

After months of deliberation, Hillsborough County Republican Tom Lee has apparently decided to run for re-election to the newly created Senate District 20 seat later this fall. The Tampa Bay Times first reported the news. Lee is currently serving in Senate District 24, a seat he won back in 2012. It was a return to the Legislature after a six-year interregnum following his defeat toĀ Alex SinkĀ in the contest for Chief Financial Officer in 2006. Before that, he served a full…
