Donations from committee backing Rod Smith came within weeks of FDP ad buys in SD 8

in Statewide by

A political committee tied to Democrat Rod Smith has given more than $393,000 to the Florida Democratic Party since May, around the same time party began airing TV ads supporting him. The state party can purchase ad time at a more affordable rate than candidates’ committees, but state law prohibits political parties and affiliated committees from accepting contributions that have been earmarked for a particular candidate. Independent Leadership for Florida, the political committee backing Smith’s Senate District 8 bid, gave $393,900 to…

Southern Heritage group slams Ed Narain

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A Southern heritage group is giving Ed Narain an F-minus grade as he campaigns to advance to Florida’s Senate District 19 race, but he’s not complaining about it. Among the pieces of legislation the Tampa House Democratic District 61 representative has boasted about on the campaign trail is his bill to remove and replace the statue of Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith from the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C. And with Republicans continuing to dominate the House and Senate, it’s sometimes difficult to hear them boast about what they’ll accomplish in Tallahassee on the campaign trail, when the reality is much starker. At Tuesday night’s Senate District 19 forum focusing on early childhood education at the Robert W. Saunders Library in Tampa, the three men and one woman looking to succeed Arthenia Joyner talked…

Here’s where sh*t stands in Tampa Bay state legislative races

in Peter/Top Headlines by

Republican Sens. Tom Lee and Bill Galvano have already won re-election, and fellow GOP incumbent Sens. Jack Latvala and Jeff Brandes only face opposition from write-in candidates in their seats. Of the six Senate seats covering Hillsborough and Pinellas County, only districts 18 and 19 will be home to a new senator in the fall. Tampa Republican Rep. Dana Young is the front-runner in the SD 18 race in both polling and fundraising, though favorable district lines and robust fundraising…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Democrat Augie Ribeiro has pumped another $100,000 of his own money into his campaign against three current and former lawmakers in the newly redrawn Senate District 19.
