Lightning, Panthers set to kick off NHL season on Friday

in Sports/Top Headlines by

It all begins for real tonight at Amalie Arena. The Tampa Bay Lightning open the 2017-18 season against the Florida Panthers, the first of four meetings between the two teams. For the Lightning, they seek a return to the playoffs after missing the post season by a single point last year. If they can avoid significant injuries to key players, always a big “if,” they have every reason to expect to be playing hockey well into the spring.

Wednesday night the two teams meet in Amalie Arena in the first game of the Stanley Cup Finals. On October 7, 1992 the Lightning franchise took the ice for the first time against the defending Western Conference Champion Blackhawks. Instead of the Lightning’s classy home of today, this game was played at Expo Hall at the Florida State Fairgrounds. First-year expansion…

Happy Memorial Day Weekend to you all, which by the way is the earliest we can ever have such a holiday, with this Monday only being the 25th of May. Incidentally, Labor Day will take place as late as it can be this year (September 7), which will actually be a factor in delaying the NFL season by a week, meaning the regular season won’t end until next January. If one of the prerequisites for being a politician is engaging in a…
