NRA sends out mailer calling on voters to support Darryl Rouson in SD 19 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

(Updated) The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund has sent out a mailer urging voters to supportĀ Darryl RousonĀ in the Florida Senate District 19 Democratic primary election later this month. The powerful gun lobbying group gives the St. Petersburg House Democrat aĀ “C” grade in the primary election. That’s obviously better than the “F” grades it gives two of Rouson’s opponent in the race, House District 59 RepresentativeĀ Ed NarainĀ and former state RepresentativeĀ Betty Reed.Ā The NRA lists a question mark next to the fourth…

War of words heats up between Ed Narain and Augie Ribeiro in SD 19 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Ever sinceĀ Augie RibeiroĀ entered the state Senate District 19 race in late June,Ā Ed NarainĀ has seemed to be personallyĀ offended by hisĀ campaign theme that he’s a Democrat “for all of us.” “Is he implying that the people that have held the seat before didn’t represent everybody in the district?” Narain asked on Monday night while attending the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce’s “Hob Nob” at the Hyatt Hotel in Tampa. “He’s the one who’s playing divisive politics, and I’m going to take a…

Democratic legislative candidates talk Donald Trump, reparations and diapers in Tiger Bay Forum

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Although many polls show the presidential election could go either way, the Democratic candidates in Florida’s Senate District 19 and House District 70 at Friday’s Suncoast Tiger Bay Club meeting say they can’t fathom an America withĀ Donald TrumpĀ leading the nation. “There are 45 million Republicans in this country, and that’s the best they can come up with?” asked an incredulousĀ Dan Fiorini, a first-time candidate in HD 70 who served as a legislative aide to formerĀ Democratic state Rep.Ā Helen SpiveyĀ two decades ago.…

Darryl Rouson and Ed Narain battle it out on policy in SD 19 NAACP sponsored debate

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The issue of school choice and vouchers is a touchy one for Democrats. In theĀ Democratic Party platformĀ that was completed last weekend in Orlando, it declares support forĀ ā€œhigh-quality public charter schoolsā€ and opposition to ā€œfor-profit charter schools focused on making a profit off of public resources.” The national NAACP, however, isĀ againstĀ public support for school choiceĀ andĀ vouchers, saying it takes away resourcesĀ for public schools. At an NAACP sponsored campaign forum Tuesday night with the four Democrats running for the Senate District 19Ā seatĀ in South…

Augie Ribeiro pours in $300 K of his own funds to compete in SD 19 race

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Augie RibeiroĀ has a few disadvantages in his attempt to win the Senate District 19 race this summer. The civil justice attorney is by far theĀ least known of the four major candidates in the Democratic Primary taking place on August 30. He got into the contest at nearly the last minute, filing just a day before qualifying ended, and he’s the only non African-American in a minority majority district. However, he does have lots of cash. Ribeiro announced today that he…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Democratic Rep. Ed Narain announced Monday that Hillsborough County Commission Chairman Lesley ā€œLesā€ Miller has endorsed his bid for the District 19 seat in the Florida Senate. “I’ve known Ed Narain since he was a student leader at the University of South Florida and now as State Representative,” said Miller, who himself served 14 years as a lawmaker. “His leadership and ability to bring people together are rare features in elected officials today.” ā€œHaving been elected Chair of the Legislative…
