Here’s how St. Pete’s elected officials are enjoying their Thanksgiving

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Perhaps the most treasured of all Thanksgiving traditions is sharing with friends and family those things you’re grateful about. This year we asked elected officials in St. Pete to share their Thanksgiving plans, traditions and various favorites. Mayor Rick Kriseman: “I cook the turkey on thanksgiving.  I live to cook the turkey.  It has an herb crust with an apricot glaze. I also make the gravy from the drippings and onions and shallots that are blended. “Definitely one of my…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It’s that time of year again. Families all over the country are looking forward to a short week and getting ready to join families in saying thanks for all the many things of which they are grateful. Sure, the usual friends, family and health are likely to top the lists, but local St. Pete officials and various politicos each have a unique list of reasons they should include this Thanksgiving. St. Pete is hot off one of its most contentious…

St. Pete City Council approves Albert Whitted runway expansion study

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council unanimously approved a runway extension feasibility study for downtown’s Albert Whitted Airport. But the measure came with some lackluster support. The $50,000 study would be funded largely through a state grant with City Council kicking in just $10,000. The study itself would take just about four months or so and would then require approval from Federal Aviation Agency to begin a much more lengthy environmental assessment. And that’s where the waters get murky. Council member Steve Kornell…

St. Petersburg City officials gathered in Williams Park this Veterans Day morning to honor Willie Rogers, of the famed Tuskegee Airmen. Rogers, who achieved the rank of Master Sergeant during his military career, was presented with the city’s 2015 Honored Veteran Award. The accompanying ceremony featured a Presentation of Colors by the St. Petersburg Police Honor Guard, songs from the Gibbs High School choir, and speeches from U.S. Rep. David Jolly and St. Pete Mayor Rick Kriseman, among others. “You…

Election night in St. Petersburg: A photo compilation

Lisa Wheeler-Brown is joined by her mom, Shirley Wheeler and stepdad, Harry Simmons, as she celebrates her victory over opponent Will Newton at Carter G. Woodson African American Museum. Wheeler-Brown defeated Will Newton 58 percent to 42 percent in the District 7 race. "Running for politics is not for the weak-hearted," Wheeler-Brown said. "Every day is challenging, every day different and makes you nervous."

Election night in St. Petersburg saw the official end of several local races by incumbents and newcomers alike. Some campaigns were brief, others much longer and certainly more contentious. Ed Montanari – a respected city activist – ran unopposed and easily won Bill Dudley’s term-limited seat. In contrast: Lisa Wheeler-Brown, another community activist, defeated Will Newton, the brother of a well-known city councilmember, in what was considered by many to be one of the most combative campaigns the city has…

Plea to St. Pete residents: End voter apathy

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Earlier Tuesday, and a bunch of times over the past several weeks, I shamed the Tampa Bay Times editorial board for taking a narrow stance on City Council races based solely on the Tampa Bay Rays stadium stalemate. Now, though, it’s time to praise Times’ columnist John Romano who is not on the editorial board. Looking down the barrel at lackluster voter turnout in what is actually a pretty damn important local election, Romano not so subtly heckled the tens…

St. Pete City Council to take up school zone controversy, but may not have all the facts

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

On Thursday, St. Petersburg’s City Council is scheduled to take up the city’s poorly designed school zones, but they might not be getting all the facts from the department of public works. After a WTSP/10 Investigates report had found the St. Petersburg Police Department wrote an astonishing number of school zone tickets at improperly signed school zones the city began, without fanfare, fixing problems at school crossings. A majority of these zones, according to WTSP reporter Noah Pransky, lacked proper signage…
