Ed Montanari campaign kick-off mirrors strong early support

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Supporters of Ed Montanari flooded into 400 Beach Seafood in downtown St. Pete Tuesday evening for the City Council candidate’s campaign kick-off event. At least 75 people, including business leaders and owners, nonprofit heads and former elected officials, snacked on seafood spread and various hors-d’oeuvres in what was a melting pot of personalities. The showing was representative of Montanari’s initial support for his District 3 City Council bid. Even before his first campaign event where Democrats rubbed elbows with prominent…

New poll shows trouble ahead if St. Pete decision makers reject “Destination St. Pete Pier”

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A new St. Pete Polls survey released overnight shows that if St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman’s Pier Selection Committee does not choose the most popular pier design from a recent survey conducted by the city, the City Council should reject that choice. When asked directly if the selection committee opts not to choose the Destination St. Pete Pier design, should the Council reject that decision? 48.3 percent of St. Pete residents agree with that statement. 36 percent disagree, and 16 percent are unsure.…

Contrasting Tampa’s Pam Iorio and Jane Castor with St. Pete’s Bill Foster and Chuck Harmon

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Now that Dontae Morris has been captured and life can begin to return to normal in Tampa — at least for some, certainly not the grief-struck families impacted by Morris’ actions — I believe it’s fair to look objectively at one of the aspects of this story: the bold, strong leadership of Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and Police Chief Jane Castor, which should be contrasted with the nebulous relationships St. Petersburg Police Chief Chuck Harmon has had with Mayors Baker…

in Statewide/The Bay and the 'Burg by

Marco Rubio spent Independence Day in St. Petersburg as a guest of Mayor Bill Foster (no friend of Charlie Crist, mind you).  Here are a few photos, first is of Foster greeting Rubio: Here’s a cuuuttteee shot of Rubio: And then there is the shot of Rubio with the DiMatteos, former state Rep. Leslie Waters and some chick dressed like the drug mule from the end of the movie Goodfellas.

HD-52 candidate Jeff Brandes draws 150 to campaign kick-off

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

If state Rep. Bill Heller isn’t worried yet, he didn’t see what I saw Thursday night at Jeff Brandes’ campaign kick-off at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.  What I saw was 150 or so mostly young, but all politically active District 52 voters, including St. Petersburg Mayor Bill Foster and Ed Montanari.  What I saw was a hungry, well-funded, well-organized candidate who is not on vacation in North Carolina, like certain incumbent state representatives.  What I saw was a hard-working…

A different perspective from Bill Foster’s about St. Pete Pride

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Henry Boxlor was right in the middle of things last week at St. Pete Pride and reports back a much different perspective than that of Mayor Bill Foster.   His report: St. Pete Pride was fun, exciting, colorful and different. I have been at every St. Pete Pride event and have watched the event and the GLBT community grdaually morph into a new exciting and vibrant social movement. It seems to me that the Pride event has become more about…
