CD 13 Democratic candidate Eric Lynn, the only declared candidate in the Pinellas County congressional race, announced his campaign team today, and it includes two nationally known figures who played important parts in getting Barack Obama elected president twice. Bill Burton and Anita Dunn from the political communications firm SKDKnickerbocker have signed on to the campaign as Lynn’s media consultants. Burton has been acting as the press spokesperson role ever since Lynn got into the race. He was the national spokesman for…

Alan Grayson & Patrick Murphy in a virtual tie in new Dem Senate poll

in 2017/Top Headlines by

The Democratic U.S. Senate race in Florida is a statistical tie, some 13 months before the primary election, according to a new poll. Orlando U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson gets 33 percent and Jupiter U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy 32 percent in the Mason-Dixon Polling & Research survey published this morning in POLITICO by reporter Marc Caputo. That’s good news for Grayson, whose stock has risen by 19 percentage points since the two candidates were polled by Mason-Dixon in April. Murphy’s numbers were up also, from 22 to 32…

Mitch Perry Report for 7.21.15 — Bill McCollum isn’t seriously thinking of running for Senate. Is he?

in Top Headlines by

I was going to opine on John Kasich entering the GOP presidential contest this morning, but let’s get to that tomorrow. Instead, let’s talk about the Florida U.S. Senate race, now that David Jolly is officially in the race, along with U.S. Ron DeSantis, Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera and retired CIA contractor Todd Wilcox. Lately the conventional wisdom from at least two Florida political reporters/analysts is that with such a relatively unknown field, former Central Florida U.S. Rep. Bill McCollum could be viable if…

Smart Politics puts McCollum’s possible campaign in context, including…

Mitch Perry Report for 4.21.15 — Odds looking better for David Jolly for Senate in ’16?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A week ago I spoke with someone close to David Jolly about the fact that the Pinellas County congressman was going to take some time to consider a candidacy for the U.S. Senate in 2016. There were and are a number of pros and cons, of course, for the still newbie Republican representative to contemplate in making such a momentous career decision. The biggest downside is the very real possibility that after yearning to serve in Washington for perhaps his entire…

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says he supports Rick Scott’s decision to sue feds over Medicaid

in Statewide by

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday said he supports a move by Florida Gov. Rick Scott to sue the federal government over souring Medicaid negotiations. In a press release issued by Abbott’s office the governor said that he “commends” Scott’s decision to take legal action and “Texas will support Florida in its litigation against the federal government.” “Florida’s approach should be determined by Floridians, not coerced by federal bureaucrats,” Abbott said in the release. It’s not exactly clear what “support”…

Pam Bondi says she’ll join Rick Scott in Medicaid lawsuit

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Attorney General Pam Bondi said she will help Gov. Rick Scott sue the federal Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services for withholding supplemental Medicaid funding for Florida’s hospitals. In a release Bondi said her office “led the lawsuit that stopped the federal government from forcing states to expand Medicaid and we will not sit by while the Obama administration holds hostage LIP funding in an effort to force the expansion here in Florida.” Scott’s office on Thursday issued a statement…
