Following protest, PSTA re-issues outside bus advertisement proposal requests

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority has decided to re-issue its request for bus advertisement proposals following an official protest by Direct Media, one of the companies that lost out on the initial contract award. According to the PSTA’s CEO, Brad Miller, the protest and ultimate re-issue of the request for proposals stemmed from confusion during the procurement process. “One of the issues that wasn’t clear […] was exactly […] how [the vying companies] were supposed to submit a [bid], given that we…

PSTA utilizing consultant Tony Collins, one of the original architects of Greenlight Pinellas plan

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Tampa public relations firm Tucker/Hall was paid more than $400,000 by the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) in 2013 and 2014 to create a public education campaign for the Greenlight Pinellas transit referendum that was soundly defeated at the polls last November. One of the leading players for Tucker/Hall at the time was Tony Collins, who served as senior vice president for the agency. But after Collins and the firm parted ways early in 2014, coincidentally so did PSTA’s relationship with Tucker/Hall. By…

PSTA explores all-electric bus option

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

An American company that builds all-electric transit buses rolled through Pinellas County Wednesday to court the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority. PSTA employees hopped aboard Proterra’s all-electric 40-foot bus called Catalyst. The bus doesn’t look all that different than others, but it sounds a whole lot quieter and doesn’t require a drop of diesel fuel. It runs solely on electricity. Nearly a third of PSTA’s fleet currently runs diesel-hybrid buses. Those are the models the agency has been purchasing almost exclusively…

Last month, it looked like a $1.25 million appropriation for a bus rapid transit pilot program in St. Pete was dead in the water after it was left out of a budget proposed in the Senate. Transit backers in Pinellas County are celebrating thanks to an amendment adopted Wednesday that will get the project started. While the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority won’t be getting the full $1.25 million, there is a $1 million appropriation in the Senate’s budget that would…

(Not) shocking news — PSTA won’t be putting up another referendum in 2016

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Stop the presses! The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority won’t be taking another stab at a transit referendum in 2016. Well, you don’t say! Of course they aren’t going to try that again so soon. PSTA board members and Greenlight Pinellas backers are still licking their wounds from a crippling, embarrassing defeat just four months ago. Who the H-E double hockey sticks would want to go down that road again before stopping to catch a breath and, I don’t know, avoid…

Could Senate budget be a referendum on PSTA CEO Brad Miller?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The Florida Senate has not placed a $1.25 million appropriation for Bus Rapid Transit in St. Pete in its budget. The funding would have paid for a BRT pilot program with express bus service running from downtown St. Pete to St. Pete Beach along First Avenues North and South. According to Clearwater state Sen. Jack Latvala, who sits on the transportation, tourism and economic development appropriations subcommittee, it’s not there because such a program would be redundant. “There’s a system…

Mike Deeson raw at Tiger Bay

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There were a lot of laughs when veteran local investigative TV reporter Mike Deeson took to the dais at the Tampa Tiger Bay Club meeting at Jackson Bistro on Harbor Island on Friday, but also a few bits of news. On former and probable future House District 64 Republican Jamie Grant, Deeson said that though no criminal charges were called for in a recent Hardee County grand jury report on Grant’s acceptance of millions of dollars of taxpayer funds for…
