Today on Context Florida: Surprise FDLE visit, Medicaid, Florida Forever and presidential primary

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today on Context Florida:  Daniel Tilson recounts a surprise visit from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which claimed they received an anonymous tip on an alleged threatening Facebook comment about Gov. Scott. Tilson posted a link to an earlier Context Florida column about Scott’s tax-cutting propaganda gimmick this week, playfully (mockingly) titled Rick Scott’s Magical Mystery Tax Cut Calculator. The uncertain future of Medicaid financing has received much attention during the past few weeks of the legislative session, says State Sen.…

Bruce Ritchie: Is House giving Florida Forever $205 million? Nope

in Top Headlines by

Words matter, or they should – at least for journalists. Not necessarily for politicians. Case in point: the Florida House leadership saying that it has $205 million in the proposed 2015-16 state budget for Florida Forever, the state’s land-buying program. Nope, not true. In fact, the House budget proposal doesn’t include a single dollar for Florida Forever, in my opinion, although it seems to have some for land acquisition. How much? We can’t be sure. Florida Forever actually is a…

Today on Context Florida: Hillary’s inevitability, Uniform Crime Reports, litigation and conservation land

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today on Context Florida: Emily’s List emailed Martin Dyckman to ask whether he wants to help elect a “pro-choice Democratic woman president.” Yes, he replied, if it’s Elizabeth Warren. They never emailed back. Dyckman believes that if Hillary Clinton’s aura of inevitability isn’t punctured fairly soon, the Democrats can look forward to one of those Titanic moments – when everyone realizes the ship is sinking and nothing can save it. Uniform Crime Reports are what every law enforcement agency turns in…

Is the environment screwed in the House allocations? Maybe, but we don’t know yet

in Top Headlines by

Wasn’t the environment supposed to get more money under Amendment 1 — not less? Is this the old Lottery-style switcharoo? Those are obvious questions to be asking after the House issued the general revenue allocation on Friday for the 2015-16 state budget. Agriculture and natural resources spending appeared to be taking a hit — at least compared to last year’s allocation. Last year the allocation was $467.8 million for the agriculture and natural resources and a portion of general government. This year the allocation…

Today on Context Florida: Selma & LeRoy Collins, voting rights, honeybees and educational icebergs

in Apolitical/Top Headlines by

Today on Context Florida: State troopers, sheriff’s deputies savagely attacked voting rights marchers at Selma, Ala., with clubs, tear gas and cattle prods on March 7, 1965; Martin Dyckman says two great Americans rushed to the city to try to take command of the perilous situation. One was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., determined to lead a second march — regardless of the consequences — two days later. The other was former Florida Gov. LeRoy Collins, President Lyndon Johnson’s civil rights…

Beekeepers, stung by 2014 veto, try again for research site

in Top Headlines by

Florida’s beekeepers say honey bees play a sweet role in agriculture and the economy but they need help — and state funding — to maintain a healthy population. The Florida State Beekeepers Association is requesting $3.5 million for an apiary research center at the University of Florida. Florida is the third largest honey-producing state, with a reported crop value of $22.7 million in 2013, according to the university. The state has about 3,500 beekeepers now compared with 1,200 a decade…

Today on Context Florida: Debbie Wasserman Schultz, negative editorials, Gunshine Staters and development projects

in Apolitical by

Today on Context Florida: Everyone seems to be completely blowing off Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s candidacy and thinks her chances of winning a 2016 Senate race. At the risk commendation to outlier status for eternity, Peter Schorsch makes the case for her. Benjamin Franklin delivered the line, “In this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” Were he alive today, Steve Crisafulli believes Franklin would amend his short list of inevitabilities with a declaration that Florida Republicans…
