in 2017/Top Headlines by

U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy‘s campaign for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate hauled in $1.46 million in the fourth quarter of 2016, the campaign said Tuesday. The total raises Murphy’s cash-on-hand balance to $4.3 million, according to the campaign. That’s only a modest increase from the $3.5 million that the Jupiter Democrat reported in the bank at the end of the third quarter, but his quarterly spending has ramped up as he has filled out much of his campaign staff…

David Jolly aims to curb federal elected officials from raising money while in office

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

The corrupting effect of money on politics is a battle cry often heard from the left or more often from third-party or independent voters. Republican U.S. Rep. David Jolly, however, is throwing his weight behind a measure that could limit how federal candidates raise money. Jolly has proposed bill that would prevent federally elected officials while in office – including the president, vice president and members of Congress – from devoting time directly soliciting contributions for re-election or election to…

Will Newton hauls in nearly $10,000 in final campaign funding push

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council candidate Will Newton crushed his opponent, Lisa Wheeler-Brown, in the last campaign finance reports due before Tuesday’s election. Newton raised nearly $10,000 in just one week compared to Wheeler-Brown’s $1,740 haul. The latest campaign finance win brings Newton’s total contributions to more than $72,000 while Wheeler-Brown has raised just $57,000. And Wheeler-Brown has less than $2,000 in the bank while Newton sits with nearly $18,000. That’s a lot of money to work with in the final…

Will Newton continues to widen fundraising gap in race against Lisa Wheeler-Brown

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council candidate Will Newton has outraised his opponent by nearly $10,000. That’s after outraising her by nearly $1,200 during the latest reporting period between October 5 and 18. So far, Newton has raked in more than $62,000 since announcing his candidacy in June. Lisa Wheeler-Brown has raised $55,634 even though she entered the race six months before him. The difference lies in the lopsided prevalence in high-dollar contributions. Newton has continuously raked in money from outside groups. During…

Philip Garrett consistently fails to properly file campaign finance documents; has two foreclosures

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete City Council candidate Philip Garrett‘s finance history is a mess. So, far in his bid to unseat incumbent District 7 council person Steve Kornell, Garrett has filed a series of inconsistent campaign finance reports. For example, at the end of September Garrett reported $800 in contributions. Then he reported another $420, but failed to include the previous $800. The reports also don’t reflect totals from August when Garrett raised $100. The contributions also don’t add up. On a…

Despite campaign controversy, Lisa Wheeler-Brown out-raises Will Newton in latest reports

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

If campaign finance reports are any indication, Lisa Wheeler-Brown supporters are unfazed by recent reports highlighting a series of campaign finance missteps that could violate Florida election laws. Reports filed Friday show Wheeler-Brown raised $11,700 between September 14 through October 4th. During that same time frame, Wheeler-Brown’s opponent, Will Newton, raised $9,415. Reports showing Wheeler-Brown used $500 in campaign funds for personal dental work, misreported that expense as office space for more than six months and failed to report in-kind…

Lisa Wheeler-Brown fails to report in-kind contributions for office space

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

City Council candidate Lisa Wheeler-Brown utilized office space in a nonprofit St. Pete facility to meet with campaign staff and supporters every Thursday for about four months but did not disclose this as an in-kind contribution on official campaign reports. This is a clear-cut violation of campaign finance laws, Stetson University’s Dr. Wayne T. Bailey, a political science professor at its Deland campus. According to state election law, candidates must report  “the total sums of all loans, in-kind contributions, and other receipts by or for such…
