Rays believe they will eventually be a solid-hitting team

in Sports/Top Headlines by

In his office, Kevin Cash is saying it. In front of his locker, Evan Longoria is saying it. To all the world, Logan Forsythe is “absolutely” saying it. This Tampa Bay Rays team will hit. Eventually. Oh, you might wonder after the start of the season. The Rays had only 18 runs in their first six games. They have led in only seven of 63 innings. There are still low averages in the lineup like the .050 of Brad Miller…

Rays enter their season flooded with more questions than answers

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Questions. We have questions. The Tampa Bay Rays? The Rays, on the other hand, have answers. At least, they hope they have answers. The Rays, 80-82 in an injury-plagued season a year ago, will attempt to contend for the AL East title this year. But that might be easier said than done. A lot of people seem to be picking the Toronto Blue Jays to win the division, and if not them the Boston Red Sox, and if not them…

Love of baseball an eternal link between Tampa Bay, Cuba

in Sports/Top Headlines by

It isn’t that far, really. Unless, of course, you are traveling through politics. When the Tampa Bay Rays play Tuesday in Havana against the Cuban National team, it will be only 321 miles away from home. But it goes through old embargoes and the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Bay of Pigs and Fidel and Fredo betraying Michael and defectors and a lifetime of hard feelings. On the other hand, there is baseball. Cuba has always loved baseball, despite Fidel…

Tampa Bay Rays set roster for preseason game against Cuba

Thanks to a bit of lobbying by his teammates, Dayron Varona is going home. Several players, inclucing Chris Archer and Evan Longoria, spoke up on the behalf of Varona, but manager Kevin Cash said there was no need. “Obviously, this is a very special opportunity for me,”…

Ranking the newcomers to the Tampa Bay Rays for 2015

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The hope is that they all are wonderful. All-Stars. Impact players. Alas, baseball doesn’t work that way. In baseball, there will be some players who bounce back from last season’s problems and others who repeat them. If it’s up to the Tampa Bay Rays, however, which of their six newcomers would they prefer to have a good season. 1. Shortstop Brad Miller: A year ago, when the Rays looked at Asdrubal Cabrera, manager Kevin Cash stressed the team merely needed…

Spring training approaches for reconstructed Tampa Bay Rays

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Can Corey Dickerson hit away from Coors Field? Is Brad Miller really an everyday shortstop? Will Steve Pearce really add some pop to the offense? The Tampa Bay Rays begin to find out the answers to these, and a couple of dozen other questions, when they open spring training (to 38 pitchers and catchers) in 10 days. It will be the team’s 19th spring, and its eighth in Charlotte County. Last season, the Rays finished 80-82, but this year, there…

Year in Review: This season, the Rays hope to avoid their late-season fate

in Sports/Top Headlines by

For much of the season, the Tampa Bay Rays were concerned with building a new home. Perhaps they should have been worried about how to get home instead. In their first season under Kevin Cash, the Rays were 14th in a 15-league American League as far as scoring runs in last year’s 80-82 season. And while injuries to the pitching staff were a main factor, the team’s offense, as always, turned out to be insufficient. The Rays were seventh in the…
