Mitch Perry Report 9.6.16 — Enough nonsense about how “now” the presidential election campaign season begins

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

My biggest fear of an approaching major storm living here in Tampa is losing electricity, with Florida still in full summer mode here in early September. That’s exactly what happened beginning last Friday in Tallahassee, and there were still some residential homes in North Florida as of yesterday still without power. Back here in Tampa, Hillary Clinton will give a speech on national security this afternoon, where we’re officially nine weeks away from the General Election, and the first day of our…

Mitch Perry Report for 5.23.16 — Why is Mark Cuban being taken so seriously?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Well, Mark Cuban looks pretty prescient this morning. The Dallas Mavericks owner told Chuck Todd on NBC’s Meet The Press yesterday that he thinks that the Oklahoma City Thunder will take the NBA title next month. The Thunder look pretty ascendant today after humiliating my Golden State Warriors last night in OKC, and now lead that series 2-1. The winner will likely face LeBron James and the very hungry Cleveland Cavaliers. So what was Cuban even doing on “MTP” anyway? Apparently being asked if…

Wrong number? Donald Trump’s TV telephone interviews in spotlight

in 2017/Top Headlines by

In television news, a telephone interview is typically frowned upon. Donald Trump‘s fondness for them is changing habits and causing consternation in newsrooms, while challenging political traditions. Two organizations are circulating petitions to encourage Sunday morning political shows to hang up on Trump. Some prominent holdouts, like Fox’s Chris Wallace, refuse to do on-air phoners. Others argue that a phone interview is better than no interview at all. Except in news emergencies, producers usually avoid phoners because television is a…

Donald Trump skipping Fox News debate Thursday night

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Here are the latest developments from the 2016 race for president, one week out from the Iowa caucuses. All times local. 6:20 p.m. Donald Trump‘s campaign manager says Trump is skipping the next Republican debate. The Republican candidates are set to square off in the Fox News debate Thursday night, their final debate before Monday’s Iowa caucuses. Trump previously had said he may not show up. But campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said during a Tuesday evening news conference in Marshalltown,…

Mitch Perry Report for 1.4.16 – Welcome back Christie, Carly and the whole gang

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Happy New Year to everyone, and welcome back to reading the MPR in 2016. Yesterday many of the GOP presidential candidates were on “the shows” as The Donald refers to them, and there were amusing moments throughout the morning. My favorite was perhaps Chris Wallace getting into Chris Christie’s grill regarding how the New Jersey Governor has been making hay out of Marco Rubio’s growing absentee problem in the Senate, an issue that backfired on Jeb Bush in a previous…

Mitch Perry Report for 11.30.15 — Accuracy on the campaign trail

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Welcome back to the working world, folks. I hope you all had a glorious Thanksgiving weekend holiday. I enjoyed the time off by seeing some really good films (“Brooklyn” and a very surprisingly good “Creed“), some good football (highlighted by Stanford’s last second victory over Notre Dame, although it’s always nice to see Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers teams go down), and a little politics thrown in there as well, in Sarasota. Now let’s talk about the truth, and whether…

On MTP, Jeb Bush says Marco Rubio has “given up” on his day job

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Although he’s been hammered by the punditry class for getting schooled by Marco Rubio for daring to bring up his poor voting record in the U.S. Senate at last week’s GOP presidential debate, Jeb Bush said today that he has no regrets about doing so. “I got to be governor of a state and accomplish big things,” Bush told Meet The Press’s Chuck Todd in an interview taped on Saturday in Miami and aired on Sunday morning. “And in this era of…
