Mitch Perry Report for 1.4.16 – Welcome back Christie, Carly and the whole gang

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Happy New Year to everyone, and welcome back to reading the MPR in 2016. Yesterday many of the GOP presidential candidates were on “the shows” as The Donald refers to them, and there were amusing moments throughout the morning. My favorite was perhaps Chris Wallace getting into Chris Christie’s grill regarding how the New Jersey Governor has been making hay out of Marco Rubio’s growing absentee problem in the Senate, an issue that backfired on Jeb Bush in a previous…

Mitch Perry Report for 12.16.15 – Fear and loathing in Las Vegas

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

With all the Republican candidates gathering at the Venetian in Las Vegas for the last GOP presidential debate in 2015, the question I ask you today is – will the Republican nominee be anyone other than Donald Trump or Ted Cruz? Trump was his classic self last night, but finally had somebody take it to him in the person of Jeb Bush, who had several well-rehearsed put-down lines that had the Donald mumbling to himself and making absurd faces. Bush condemned…

Mitch Perry Report for 12.15.15 – Vegas, baby, Vegas!

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

After the third GOP presidential debate in late October, I wrote in this space after Marco Rubio received plaudits for his effort if it would translate into votes. A couple of weeks later, after the fourth debate in Milwaukee, the conventional wisdom from pundits was that it was time that Rubio and Ted Cruz were going to take off. As we’ve seen in the past week, Cruz has finally jump started his campaign, and now leads in several polls in Iowa, the…

Mitch Perry Report for 12.14.15 – Warming up for a Tampa Bay Winter

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Gosh it’s hot out there. That’s what went through my mind this morning when I went running at 5 a.m. Seriously, this felt like the warmest morning yet of what has been a very warm December in the Tampa Bay area. Maybe it’s the El Niño affect, but this unseasonably warm winter weather isn’t relegated to those of us in the Sunshine State. In Cleveland yesterday, it was 64 degrees, one degree off the warmest December day in the city’s history.…

Mitch Perry Report for 12.4.15 – on Jeb, Ted and Kobe

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

First off, I want to wish the best for Brendan McLaughlin, who will be departing as a news anchor at ABC affiliate WFTS in a couple of weeks after 21 years in the market. Like yours truly, Brendan hails from the San Francisco Bay Area (Marin County, actually, I believe). Folks, there ain’t that many of us in Tampa Bay, much less Florida. I wish him the best in his future endeavors. The latest CNN/ORC national poll of GOP candidates has Jeb…

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The back and forth between the representatives of Jameis Winston and Erica Kinsman has ramped up on the eve of CNN’s airing of the film “The Hunting Ground.” The cable news station is scheduled to show documentary about sexual assault on American college campuses Sunday. The film aired at the Sundance Film Festival and features Kinsman, who accused Winston of sexual assault while the two were students at Florida State. The Hollywood Reporter said Friday that a Winston lawyer sent…

David Axelrod, senior adviser for Barack Obama’s two successful presidential campaigns, will speak in St. Petersburg this Friday night at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, in an address sponsored by the Poynter Institute and the Association of Opinion Journalists. Since leaving politics after the 2012 election, Axelrod has become a professional political pundit, initially for MSNBC and now with CNN, where he moved to this past September. In addition, he also serves as the director of Institute in Politics at…
