St. Pete’s state of the economy reception message: We’re awesome

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Officials in St. Pete hosted a reception Tuesday to go over the state of the city’s economy. Basically, it was a commercial for the city, complete with a free drink for anyone in attendance. And the event wasn’t very well-scheduled, considering organizers nestled the reception in the middle of Election Day, ensuring most reporters were too busy to notice. In any case, the take-away was a good one. St. Pete, like, So. Totally. Rocks. First of all, the city is growing. St. Pete’s population…

Creative Loafing endorses Lisa Wheeler-Brown and the result could be game-changing

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

In a fairly unusual move, Creative Loafing has made endorsements in the St. Pete City Council races. Not surprisingly, they’re behind incumbents Charlie Gerdes and Steve Kornell. The decision to endorse Lisa Wheeler-Brown over Will Newton, however, came with a little more deliberation. CL threw together an ad hoc editorial board comprised of editor David Warner, News and Politics editor Kate Bradshaw and managing editor Scott Harrell. They listed myriad reasons why both candidates were excellent, writing that “the circus that has…

Florida Aquarium earns Creative Loafing’s Best of the Bay for best environmental group

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Pinellas County is home to some of the most avid environmental groups in the Tampa Bay area. The Sierra Club has its regional office in St. Pete. Tampa Bay Watch is posted just outside of Fort DeSoto and activists pushing for conservation-related causes are aplenty. But it was a Tampa group that nabbed Creative Loafing’s nod for best environmental group in the 2015 Best of the Bay series. The Florida Aquarium, located in downtown Tampa’s Channelside district, earned that honor,…

St. Pete rocks it in Creative Loafing’s 2015 Best of the Bay

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

St. Pete fared pretty well in Creative Loafing’s Best of the Bay. In perhaps her biggest honor, the Sunshine City was tapped by “reader’s choice” for the best city, beating out Tampa. “Just learned we won Best City (of course!). Best city, best people. Thank you, St. Pete,” Mayor Rick Kriseman wrote on his Facebook page. But it was St. Pete’s eclectic food and booze scene that really stood out. Though Tampa is well on its way with incredible spots…

Mitch Perry Report for 9.23.15 — The best of Tampa Bay, mostly

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Welcome to the the autumn equinox, Yom Kippur, Pope Francis’ first full day in the United States, and……the unveiling of Creative Loafing’s annual Best-of-the-Bay issue. Tonight, the folks associated with the local alternative weekly will publish their BOTB issue, literally and figuratively the biggest paper that the company will produce this year. As some of you may know, I served as political editor of the paper for five years before making the move over to Florida Politics/SaintPetersBlog last November, right after last year’s midterm…

CL Best of the Bay voting open; includes local politics

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Voting is underway for about a bazillion categories in the 2015 Best of the Bay Creative Loafing online poll. Included among those are best and worst local politicians. The lists of nominees in both categories are extensive and even include some substantial overlap. However, with rampant partisanship, it’s no surprise that someone who gets nominated as “best” might also find themselves in the “worst” category. What’s more telling are the politicians in either one category or the other. Hillsborough County…

Mitch Perry Report for 8.3.15 — Forget Thursday. 14 GOP prez candidates debate tonight in NH

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Happy Monday, which, if you live or work in Tampa, means another perilous morning for actually driving your car, as it’s raining hard once again as I write this (6:18 a.m.). This weekend’s storms and floods indicate that Tampa may never become the major city it aspires to; though there are plans to raise taxes to pay for stormwater projects this year, the conventional wisdom laid down by geologists and past and present mayors of Tampa is that the way that the…
