Augie Ribeiro has now spent more than $672,000 in quest to win Senate District 19

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Augie Ribeiro has now spent $672,075 in the Senate District 19 race. The St. Petersburg-based civil justice attorney’s fundraising prowess — more than 70 percent of it from his own deep pockets — dwarfs the totals of the other three candidates in Tuesday’s Democratic primary, Ed Narain, Betty Reed and Darryl Rouson. Narain, the House District 61 state Representative trying to advance to the Senate, has the most cash-on-hand in the waning days of the campaign with $55,691. Among his recent contributions in the latest fundraising period of…

Southern Heritage group slams Ed Narain

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

A Southern heritage group is giving Ed Narain an F-minus grade as he campaigns to advance to Florida’s Senate District 19 race, but he’s not complaining about it. Among the pieces of legislation the Tampa House Democratic District 61 representative has boasted about on the campaign trail is his bill to remove and replace the statue of Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith from the National Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C. Smith was a St. Augustine native who served as a Confederate army general during the Civil War. The…

We polled the Democratic primary in Senate District 19; you’ll never believe what happened next

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

The Senate District 19 race will come down to the wire. A new poll by St. Pete Polls found the race is essentially tied, proving the outcome will depend heavily on ground game and get-out-the-vote efforts in the final days of primary. The survey, conducted for FloridaPolitics.com, found 26 percent of Democratic voters said they were backing Ed Narain. Darryl Rouson is in second with 24 percent, followed by Betty Reed with 19 percent. Augie Ribeiro is polling at 17…

SD 19 candidates talk about early education and getting bills passed in a GOP Legislature

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

It’s always challenging for any Democrat to get a bill they sponsored passed in the Florida Legislature. And with Republicans continuing to dominate the House and Senate, it’s sometimes difficult to hear them boast about what they’ll accomplish in Tallahassee on the campaign trail, when the reality is much starker. At Tuesday night’s Senate District 19 forum focusing on early childhood education at the Robert W. Saunders Library in Tampa, the three men and one woman looking to succeed Arthenia Joyner talked…

Here’s where sh*t stands in Tampa Bay state legislative races

in Peter/Top Headlines by

Republican Sens. Tom Lee and Bill Galvano have already won re-election, and fellow GOP incumbent Sens. Jack Latvala and Jeff Brandes only face opposition from write-in candidates in their seats. Of the six Senate seats covering Hillsborough and Pinellas County, only districts 18 and 19 will be home to a new senator in the fall. Tampa Republican Rep. Dana Young is the front-runner in the SD 18 race in both polling and fundraising, though favorable district lines and robust fundraising…

SD 19 candidates talk it out at Tampa Tiger Bay Forum

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Although the candidates for Florida’s 19th Senate District have engaged in numerous campaign forums over the past couple of months, Friday’s encounter at the Tampa Tiger Bay Club did offer some new wrinkles. One was the appearance of the lone Republican in the race, John Houman, who has carried such a light footprint to date in the campaign that Ed Narain joked that he didn’t know he actually existed. The other new element was watching Augie Ribeiro (twice) break into a not-so-terrible Bernie Sanders impression. The Democratic…

Direct mail round-up: Flyer says Augie Ribeiro not a true Democrat, has no Florida law license

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Listen to Augie Ribeiro talk, hear his ads or read his campaign literature and two themes stand out: Ribeiro is an attorney who fights for the little guy and he’s the only “true Democrat” in the race for state Senate District 19. But a flyer that landed in Democratic mailboxes Monday — the first day of early voting in Pinellas — tells voters just to hold on. Ribeiro, it says, is not only not a true Democrat, he wasn’t even…
