Darryl Rouson files legislation to ban Confederate flag on public property in Florida

in 2017/Top Headlines by

St. Petersburg House Democrat Darryl Rouson has filed legislation (HB 243) that would ban the display of Confederate flags and symbols on publicly owned or leased property. It will serve as a companion to Orlando Democrat Geraldine Thompson’s bill in the state Senate. “I can understand people wanting to honor the legacy of their Southern history, but when history and symbolism to others becomes distasteful we should be sensitive to it, and reconsider how we honor history,” the Pinellas County legislator said on Friday. The legislation…

Mitch Perry Report for 9.24.15 — Will the RPOF gamble on having a meaningful primary election?

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

There’s no question that over the past two decades that Florida has become one of the biggest swing states in the nation, a status that can ultimately determine who our next president is. It may not be the swing state (arguably you could call Ohio the ultimate swing state), but it’s crucially important, especially for the Republican Party. Like political junkies everywhere not living in Iowa or New Hampshire (or in more recent years, Nevada and South Carolina), party officials grew weary that when the presidential…

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

When the Florida Legislature begins redrawing up all 40 state Senate districts during its next scheduled special session (October 26-November 6), the Senate District 22 seat is expected to change dramatically and become much more Democratic Party friendly. If that scenario plays out, current GOP incumbent Jeff Brandes is expected to bail out of that race and find another Pinellas County seat to run in. So who might run in the newly formed SD 22 seat? A new survey by St. Pete Polls released…

Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority CEO Brad Miller had just two minutes to list his legislative priorities this session. That includes a $1 million ask for final design funding for the proposed Central Avenue Bus Rapid Transit line that would create an express route from connecting downtown St.…

Darryl Rouson to address Suncoast Tiger Bay Club

in The Bay and the 'Burg by

Though the Suncoast Tiger Bay Club has been hit or miss over the years – its members’ hot takes coming up more like “medium,” “mild,” or “scripted” at times – there are few Pinellas pols more guaranteed to stir up heated debate than Republican-turned-Democrat Rep. Darryl Rouson of St. Pete. The fourth-term lawmaker is sure to get peppered with questions about his possible state Senate ambitions, unorthodox views (for a Democrat) on medical marijuana, and his role in that rumored anti-Minority…

The “Beyond Brotherly Love” mailer, the Newton campaign trumpets the differences between the two candidates. “I take an issue and run right at you with it. My brother is more quiet and methodical,” a quote from Wengay Newton reads on one side of the flyer. “He’s all about bargaining…

2016 House field continues to shape up in central Florida, Tallahassee

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

It’s more than a year out from 2016 legislative elections, normally a quiet time when warring factions retreat to their camps and use the odd-numbered year to strategize and keep their powder dry. But with recent drama surrounding the race for the 2021-22 speakership, state party infighting involving sitting House Rep./RPOF Chairman Blaise Ingoglia and an imminent Senate map redraw likely to pit incumbents against one another as they vie to ascend to the upper chamber, things in the House are very much “on” in…
