Pam Bondi endorses capitol co-worker, Carlos Lopez-Cantera, for Senate

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is endorsing her state capitol co-worker, Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, for the U.S. Senate. Bondi, a Republican, said she is supporting the conservative Lopez-Cantera for what is to be a “vital” election in 2016. “Carlos has a proven record of success on behalf of Floridians who seek less taxes, less government and more job creation,” she said in a statement. “I have full confidence that if given the opportunity, he will continue this work as…

David Jolly 22%, Jeff Miller 12%, Carlos Lopez-Cantera 11%, Ron DeSantis 9% in poll of GOP race for U.S. Senate

in 2017/Top Headlines by

Tampa Bay’s David Jolly is the surprising frontrunner in the race for the GOP nomination for Florida’s U.S. Senate seat, according to a new poll conducted after Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera announced his bid for the seat. However, for the ever-widening field of Republicans seeking to replace Marco Rubio in the U.S. Senate, the primary challenge for each of them will be carving out statewide name recognition. According to a new survey from St. Pete Polls conducted for Florida politics, six…

Tampa Bay area party chairs deal with Supreme Court ruling on redistricting

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

With no official word in yet when the Florida Legislature will reconvene to begin the process of redrawing congressional districts, much of the Tampa Bay area political picture remains fuzzy 13 months from the 2016 primary elections. Most of the uncertainly resides in Pinellas County, where a newly created CD 13 district is expected to improve the odds of a Democrat taking control of the seat for the first time in generations. “We’re excited that the courts have taken a…

The irony of how redistricting has resurrected Charlie Crist

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

While thinning files last week, I came across one labeled “Crist” and wondered whether to dump it. After successive losses for the U.S. Senate and for governor again, hadn’t Charlie reached the end of the line? No, I thought, something will happen to bring him back. The next day, something did. It was the Florida Supreme Court’s dramatic decision to order major changes in eight of Florida’s gerrymandered congressional districts. Among them are the 13th, lying exclusively within Pinellas County,…

It was just an average Thursday in the Florida political world. But first a note about Jeb Bush, who announced that through his own campaign and his Super PAC Right to Rise, has raised a total of $114 million this year, with all but $11 million coming from Right to Rise, which began fundraising for the “non-candidate” back in mid-December. You remember the $100 million figure was broadcast months ago as part of the “Shock and Awe” phase of the…

Florida politicians react to today’s redistricting ruling

in Statewide/Top Headlines by

Florida’s Supreme Court threw out the state’s congressional map on Thursday, in a ruling that found lawmakers illegally gerrymandered political districts. Justices then ordered the Republican-led Legislature to redraw eight congressional districts, with two that expect to be heavily contested in 2016. Incumbents directly affected by the ruling are Democratic Reps. Corrine Brown, Kathy Castor, Ted Deutch, and Lois Frankel, as well as Republican Reps. David Jolly, Mario Diaz-Balart, Carlos Curbelo, and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. At least 14 more will be…

Kathy Castor to report raising nearly $800,000 for her re-election campaign

in The Bay and the 'Burg/Top Headlines by

Although Kathy Castor is one of a handful of Florida congressional Democrats who will see the contours of her district redrawn in the wake of the Florida Supreme Court’s ruling today on redistricting, nobody in Florida politics suspects it will affect Democratic Party leanings substantially. “Florida voters adopted Fair Districts amendments to our Florida Constitution and, today, the Florida Supreme Court reaffirmed that districts need to be drawn to ensure that all Floridians have fair representation.  I agree with their…
