FSU’s Deondre Francois named first Sunshine State winner

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Even on the morning after, Deondre Francois was impressive. Even in hindsight, it was fairly impressive when a redshirt freshman was thrust into the starting role and led FSU to the largest comeback (22 points) in its history. Even upon reflection, it was starting that he threw 52 times for 419 yards against the No. 11 team in the country. After all of that, it seems like slam-dunk that Francois would be the first Sunshine Player of the Week. Other…

Florida quarterback Luke Del Rio stars in his debut

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Steady, they hoped for. Efficient, they wanted. Promising, they pulled for. But this? University of Florida quarterback Luke Del Rio captured Gainesville by storm in his debut. Del Rio hit 29 of 44 passes for 258 yards to lead the team to surprisingly tough 24-7 win against Umass. Florida led only 10-7 going into the fourth quarter before pulling away. “I thought Luke did a pretty good job,” Florida coach Jim McElwain said. “He took care of the ball, he…

Florida quarterback Luke Del Rio’s start highlights schedule

in Sports/Top Headlines by

It’s the quarterback’s day. Nothing can change that. Today is all about Luke Del Rio, the new passer of the Florida Gators. He’s the guy who really counts. Oh, Mark Richt matters. He’s the new coach for the   UM Hurricanes. And Scott Frost matters. He’s the new guy at Central Florida. Marlon Mack matters for USF. But, really, it’s  Luke Del Rio’s day. They love their quarterbacks at Florida. That’s why three of them – Steve Spurrier, Danny Wuerffel and Tim…

Florida reopens football schedule against the Minutemen

in Sports/Top Headlines by

They’re called the Minutemen. Roughly speaking, that’s about how long UMass should be in Saturday’s game against the University of Florida. Oh, it’s still opening day for the Gators, what with a new quarterback (Luke Del Rio) and an old friend (Steve Spurrier, playing the role of Mr. Two Bits). And, like most football fans, Florida’s faithful don’t mind winning 52-7. What does it say about the season to come? Probably nothing. The SEC Country website predicts an 8-4 record with losses to…

Finally, Florida names Luke Del Rio its starting quarterback

in Sports/Top Headlines by

It was either the worst-kept secret in the world or the world’s slowest announcement. Either way, Luke Del Rio is the man in charge of the Florida Gators’ offense. Del Rio, a redshirt sophomore, had spent more time than anyone running with the ones, and he did the most damage in the spring game. Even new consultant Steve Spurrier said the job belonged to Del Rio, the son of the Oakland Raiders’ coach. Finally, Jim McElwain has joined the chorus and announced Del Rio will start…

Can Gators have an improved offense behind Luke Del Rio?

in Sports/Top Headlines by

Will a comeback be possible against Tennessee this time? Will a new quarterback take the Gators’ offense in his hands this year? Will the Gators be able to steamroll Ole Miss this season? By now, we are accustomed to believing that the  Florida Gators will be good on defense. But can Florida hold up on offense this time around? It couldn’t last year, not after Will Grier was suspended for PEDs. But coach Jim McElwain thinks his program has made progress this year. At quarterback, adviser Steve…

State’s quarterbacks will have to prove that they’re among the elite nationally

in Sports/Top Headlines by

The past is good. But how about the present? After a week of reflecting back on the best quarterbacks to play for each program, isn’t it time to wonder about the season to come? And, specifically, do the programs of Florida have enough quarterbacking to make runs at their conference titles? Certainly, they will not be quarterback-driven teams. Florida’s schools are hoping for surprises (such as the Gators’ Will Grier was last year before his PED suspension). They’re hoping for…
